Update: Scott Elder Named Acting Superintendent

Chief Operations Officer Scott Elder will step in when Superintendent Raquel Reedy retires at the end of the school year. Elder will work alongside Reedy during the next couple of months in an effort to make the transition as smooth as possible. He will serve as acting superintendent until the Board of Education hires a permanent replacement for Superintendent Reedy.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education announced on March 18, that is it suspending the search for a new superintendent until more is understood about mitigating the spread of the coronavirus.

Who is conducting the superintendent search? How does the search firm work with the Board of Education? What is the role of the search firm?

The search firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates was selected through a Request for Proposal (RFP) recommended by Procurement and chosen by the Board of Education. HYA was awarded a $55,595 contract in December.

Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) is a network of more than 100 independent education consultants across the nation. HYA Associates bring extensive experience and broad educational backgrounds. This independent network has made HYA the preeminent education consulting firm with more than 30 years of executive search and education consulting experience.

HYA has completed approximately 60 searches annually.  Ninety-four percent of superintendents placed stay through their first contract, and several are still serving the same district after five, ten and twenty plus years.  In 30 years they have completed nearly 1,400 searches throughout the country including large urban districts such as Denver, Los Angeles, Newark and Prince Georges County.  Since 1987, HYA has provided support for education leaders to employ school executives, address issues related to student performance, and support aspects of school district operations.

2020欧洲杯线上投注HYA serves school systems across the nation, large and small, urban and rural. HYA Associates are located all across the country to conveniently serve clients with a local focus, but with national reach.

Is the search national?

Yes, in order to attract a wide variety of qualified candidates, the search is national and not limited to any particular region. However, the Board of Education has made it clear that the successful candidate will have a thorough understanding and knowledge of New Mexico and the issues that the district and the state face.

How will the opinions and concerns of parents and community members be taken into account in choosing the next superintendent?

2020欧洲杯线上投注Like the vast majority of school boards doing superintendent searches, the APS Board of Education will ask everyone involved – teachers, parents, students, staff, community members, and business and government leaders – to kick off the search process by sharing their views about the district’s strengths, challenges, and desired characteristics of a superintendent. After the input process is completed, the information will be used to create a superintendent profile. Once the profile is approved by the Board of Education it will be used as hiring criteria to screen, interview and ultimately select the new superintendent.

How many candidates does the board interview?

Most boards select three or four candidates based on applicants for the position or candidates who have not applied but meet the criteria. The search firm will present a qualified applicant pool to the board and will help the board conduct the first and second-round interviews, the public forums and assessments of leadership skills.

How long will the search take?

On October 8, 2019, the Board of Education heard Superintendent Reedy’s retirement announcement. The search began in earnest immediately. The goal is to have a new superintendent in place by April 2020 with an official start date of July 1, 2020.

How can I get involved?

There are two times in the search process that are important times for your involvement:

  1. The first opportunity is in November 2019 regarding the development of the qualifications for the superintendent position through community forums and the survey. Input from forum participants and community members who complete surveys will be used to create a superintendent profile. Once the profile is approved by the Board of Education it will be used as hiring criteria to screen, interview and ultimately select the new superintendent.
  2. The second opportunity will be in March/April 2020 when you will have the opportunity to meet and listen to the individual APS superintendent candidates at several community forums. Audience members will be among the first in the community to meet the top candidates for the position of Albuquerque Public Schools superintendent. You will be able to submit questions and to provide your input on the candidates. Written input from audiences will be provided to members of the Board of Education for its consideration.
